A third person entering a relationship is rarely "just about sex", tempting as that explanation can be. Almost always, something else was already happening in the relationship — and it had been happening long before anyone else showed up.
Psychotherapist Esther Perel, who has spent years studying infidelity, points out that people more often stray not because they want to leave their partner, but because they want to feel alive, desired, and seen again. In other words, an affair is often not about a lack of love for the partner at all — it's about searching for a lost part of oneself, the version of you that feels excitement rather than routine.
From an attachment-theory perspective, people with anxious or avoidant attachment styles are more prone to infidelity — though for different reasons. The anxious type seeks constant reassurance from an outside relationship that they are wanted and enough. The avoidant type, by contrast, uses an outside relationship as a tool — to keep the primary partner at a safe emotional distance, so as never to get too close to anyone at all.
From a systemic-work (constellations) perspective, the third person in the relationship often occupies a distinct functional role — as odd as that may sound: they "hold" the tension, conflict, or distance the couple cannot bear to face directly, just the two of them. This closely mirrors the triangles we wrote about in our piece on family triangulation — except here, the third party isn't a relative but a romantic partner on the side, and the tension they're "holding" usually originates inside the couple itself: an unspoken grievance, a fear of closeness, a need for autonomy that never found another outlet.
It's worth saying this plainly: the fact that infidelity has a psychological logic to it is neither an excuse nor a verdict on the couple. It's simply a map pointing to where to look — usually not in one partner's "bad character", but in something the couple had stopped voicing long ago: a need for closeness, for recognition, for autonomy, or for desire that had nowhere else to go.
What can a couple facing infidelity do if they want to understand, not just split up? First, stabilise the acute pain — this isn't the moment for analysing causes. Then, once emotions have settled a little, explore together (or with a professional) what inside the relationship was seeking an outlet through this triangle, and whether a more direct path than infidelity can now be found for it. An affair is almost never only about the person who "cheated." It's about the couple, and its blind spots — and, if both are willing, a chance to finally see them.
