A couple hits a crisis — and immediately runs into the question: where do we go? To a therapist, to "work through the relationship"? Or straight to a mediator, to "just reach an agreement"? These two paths get confused more often than you'd think, and the difference between them matters.

Couples therapy works with the relationship itself: how the partners talk to each other, what lies behind the same recurring fights, which attachment patterns get activated in conflict. The goal is to understand and change the dynamic between two people — so they either stay together on new terms, or separate with clarity. It's usually a longer format: weeks or months of regular sessions.

Mediation works differently: it's a structured process aimed at a specific outcome — a resolution to a specific issue. Divorce, dividing assets, a parenting schedule, a dispute in a family business. A mediator isn't there to heal the relationship or dig into childhood — they help two people reach an agreement, here and now. It's usually a handful of sessions, not months.

American psychologist Robert Emery spent decades studying divorcing families and, in controlled studies, found that couples who went through mediation maintain warmer relationships with their ex-partner years later and are more likely to co-parent effectively than those who settled things in court. Meanwhile, couples therapist John Gottman, after studying thousands of couples, identified specific communication patterns — criticising the person rather than the behaviour, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling (his famous "Four Horsemen") — that predict divorce with striking accuracy. That's exactly the territory therapy works in, not mediation.

The bottom line is fairly simple. If the question is "what's actually going on between us" — that's a therapist's territory. If the question is "how do we separate, or agree on this specific thing" — that's a mediator's territory. And quite often you need both: therapy first, to restore the ability to talk to each other at all, and then mediation, to lock in agreements you'd never have reached otherwise.
